Dozens of Catalan activists gathered in Barcelona’s Plaza de Espana to protest against King Felipe VI’s visit to the Barcelona Motor Show, on Thursday.
Protesters held banners criticising the monarchy with the message ‘Catalonia has no king,’ as they blocked traffic during the event.
"We are here today to say clearly that Catalonia has no king, and that this Spanish king is not welcome," said David Fernandez, vice-president of the Catalan National Assembly.
"We are not asking him to leave, he is here because he believes this is his country. What we demand of our politicians is that they remember that popular mandate," he added.
"Tomorrow is October 1, and this October 1 marks four years since we had a referendum (on independence), and in that referendum we voted, we voted legally and we won," he stressed.
King Felipe VI will inaugurate the Barcelona Motor Show 2021 ‘Automobile Barcelona’ on Thursday. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez is also expected to attend the event.
SOT, Mireia Vehí, deputy of the CUP (Popular Unity Candidacy) (Spanish): "We want to show our rejection of the presence of the King of Spain, today the day before October 1st, the day before October 1st, accompanied also by the President of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, and the Government of the Generalitat, by means of an institutional representation. It seems to us a provocation, we want to say very clearly that the *inaudible* Catalans do not have a king and furthermore, we want to reiterate once again, that the monarchy is the concrete connection with Francoism, that furthermore threads can be established that explain not only Francoism but also the corruption of 40 years of the badly named Spanish democracy".
SOT, Gerard Pijoan, Omnium Cultural member (Catalan): "We demand that this corrupt monarchy and heir of Francoism, and the Spanish government that protects and whitewashes it, apologise for the police violence of 1 October, apologise for the infamous speech of 3 October, leave and repair the damage caused to the more than 350 victims of repression in this country".
SOT, David Fernandez, Vice-president of Catalan National Assembly (Catalan): "We are here today to say clearly that Catalonia has no king, and that this Spanish king is not welcome. We are not asking him to leave, he is here because he believes this is his country. What we demand of our politicians is that they remember that popular mandate.
