Relatives of prisoners complained about the conditions in Guayaquil City’s prison on Thursday, in the aftermath of deadly riots at the facility that left at least 116 inmates dead.
Hundreds of police officers and soldiers were deployed to the prison, where violence broke out on Tuesday, to restore order, after President Guillermo Lasso declared a state of emergency on Wednesday.
Over the week, at least 116 people were killed and more than 80, including two officers, were injured in confrontations between rival gangs. Six inmates were beheaded and others killed with firearms and grenades, according to police.
Authorities have blamed fighting between rival gangs over drug trafficking for the violence in the country’s overcrowded prisons, where corruption is also widespread.
