Hundreds of police officers carried out search and seize operations at the Litoral penitentiary in Guayaquil, Ecuador following a riot that left 116 people dead and 80 wounded.
Six inmates were beheaded, others were killed with firearms and grenades, according to police.
Authorities say the riot broke out due to ‘clashes between criminal gangs’.
Ecuador’s prison system on the whole is facing problems of severe overcrowding, rival gangs, and a shortage of guards.
President Guillermo Lasso declared a state of emergency following the riots.
