The colourful matryoshka-inspired Russia pavilion opened its doors to the public on Friday at the postponed Expo 2020 in Dubai, the first World Expo in the wider Arab region.
As one of the most unusual structures at Expo 2020 in Dubai, the Russian pavilion was designed as a three-storey unit that echoes the concept of the famous Russian matryoshka stacked wooden dolls.
Inside, visitors watched visual installations created with the use of high-level technological devices. According to the creators, visitors can not only learn about Russia’s scientific and cultural heritage, but also see the works of the brightest minds behind the latest cutting-edge technologies from Russia.
The souvenir shop offered well-known traditional souvenirs from Russia such as matryoshka dolls or imperial porcelain, as well as clothing of the Putin team by designer Dmitri Shishkin.
Architect Sergei Tchoban designed the pavilion according to Russia’s motto ‘Creative mind: Driving the future’ with an approach to movement and agility for the Expo’s mobility district – one of three themed zones.
It was announced that the World Chess Championship would be hosted in the Pavilion as it coincided with the Expo in November.
SOT, Yekaterina Pribytkova, Director of international communications at Russian Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai (Russian): "The Russian Pavilion, which will operate for all six months, opened today at Expo 2020 in Dubai. Our pavilion is included in the extra-large category, it is one of the largest pavilions at the exhibition this year. The size of the pavilion corresponds to its theme. Architect Sergei Tchoban created it in the form of a hemisphere entwined with 25,000 meters of various multicoloured tubes, symbolising the desire for knowledge, the unity of our country and the endless movement of Russia forward. The hemisphere pavilion itself is made as a reference to the famous matryoshka doll. When you are outside, you cannot fully appreciate the volume of our pavilion inside, and it is really worth seeing because it is a very interesting architectural effect."
SOT, Yekaterina Pribytkova, Director of international communications at Russian Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai (Russian): "The highlight of the Russian pavilion at Expo 2020 will be, in fact, our people. This pavilion is a manifesto of human intelligence, creativity, talent and innovation. The third floor houses our main exhibition, which presents the human brain, as well as stands that demonstrate the achievements created by the human mind and talent."
