Hundreds of protesters rallied in Paris on Saturday to denounce the alleged persecution of Uyghurs by the Chinese government.

Posters denouncing an ethnic genocide by China and flags of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region were held up by protesters who began to gather at 14:00 local time (12:00 GMT) in the Place de la Bastille in central Paris.

Protests have escalated in recent months following allegations by international Human Rights organisations that claim China is committing massive human rights abuses and even genocide against the Xinjiang Uyghurs, which Beijing denies.

SOUNDBITES:

SOT, Typetik, Protester (French): "So today, meet here at Place de la Bastille. There were also other gatherings last weekend, also, all the time. Explain to us, what is the problem? What happens to the complaints? And what is also happening in China? And with the Uyghurs?"

SOT, Deterre Benbassa, Protester, (French): "Listen, it’s really a kind of genocide going on in China against this minority. I am also involved in the Senate, I thought the government was working with it. The climate is not normal. When we love, we cannot remain silent in the face of such a genocide, we must take them. Do some work here to help the houses in the village. We must continue to fight, but we must mobilize more. I believe people are not really."
