CDU and CSU reflected on the party relations on former Bavarian minister president Edmund Stoiber’s 80th birthday in Munich on Friday.

CDU chairman and chancellor candidate Armin Laschet emphasised the necessary cohesion that the parties need after their defeat in the federal election. "It would be a good virtue for today: loyalty and criticism inwardly and you have always lived this good virtue and always recommended it to us," he said.

Markus Soder also contemplated on the relationship between the sister parties, calling their dynamic ‘timelessly exciting’ and pointing out their differences. "We are always close in the family, but we are still not twins, if I may say that," he said at the celebration.

Stoiber underlined the importance of the two parties standing together, stating that only in alliance they can serve Germany.

Edmund Stoiber held the position of minister president of Bavaria between 1992 and 2007 and was the head of the CSU from 1999 to 2007. In 2002 he ran as a chancellor candidate for the CSU/CDU but lost against the SPD candidate Gerhard Schroder.

SOUNDBITES:

SOT, Markus Soder, CSU leader and Bavarian Prime Minister (German): "And I have learned a lot from you about and from Strauss, what the axioms and ideas of the CSU are. Also in relation to the CDU. Don’t worry, I won’t make any current references today. Because the relationship with the CDU is timeless. Timelessly exciting. And it always was. Even if I believe that I am one of the friendlier chairmen in the long history, we are always close in the family, but we are still not twins, if I may say that. Everyone has their own area."

SOT, Armin Laschet, CDU party leader (German): "The election did not turn out the way we dreamed it would and I would have liked to make you a different gift, dear Edmund. But during these hours I often thought of you, what it was like as a chancellor candidate, Markus just mentioned it, getting on the plane believing that I have a majority and then I land and you no longer have it. In case of doubt, this is particularly tough and some say, and I believe Markus’s analysis is correct, that flood 2002 and the Iraq war had external influences on this election." *NO CUTAWAYS AT SOURCE*

SOT, Armin Laschet, CDU party leader (German): "In the meantime, if you will, in a time between no longer and not yet. Of course, many were now waiting for me to talk about the braking effect of traffic lights or the pulsating dynamic of Jamaica, I won’t do that, because today it’s all about you, the honorary chairman of the CSU and the long-standing minister president of the Free State of Bavaria." *NO CUTAWAYS AT SOURCE*

SOT, Armin Laschet, CDU party leader (German): "I was impressed by what you once told me about the Union’s solidarity. You described that even in the ‘Spiegel’ affairs when the whole of Germany was working against Franz Josef Strauss, painting a caricature of him, the ranks were closed. And the more the attacks, the closer the Union stood together. Markus Soder has just taken up that, it would be a good virtue for today: loyalty and criticism inwardly and you have always lived this good virtue and always recommended it to us." *NO CUTAWAYS AT SOURCE*

SOT, Armin Laschet, CDU party leader (German): "Not only did you fly to Moscow with Franz Josef Strauss in the famous snowstorm, you are still very well connected to Russia today and I think that this bridge is also something that you have always enforced while maintaining our values." *NO CUTAWAYS AT SOURCE*

SOT, Edmund Stoiber, Former Bavarian Minister President (German): "And that’s why I don’t wish that out of this crisis in which the CDU is currently standing and with it the partner, who of course is always caught in the same situation, the partner, so to speak, who is not so affected by it. In the end, we can always only work together to achieve something for Germany. And that’s why I make this appeal to you all." *NO CUTAWAYS AT SOURCE*

SOT, Edmund Stoiber, Former Bavarian Minister President (German): "And you mentioned that, Armin. Stand together and stick together. And you also mentioned that something has changed there. Keyword, the mirror affair. You both mentioned the resignation of the defence minister Strauss. We were in the middle of the 62nd state elections. And I saw those who did not come from Bavaria and studied at the LMU, and with whom we had dealt politically, were stunned that the CSU improved their results in the state elections compared to 58 and in this situation had the majority in the Bavarian state parliament."
