Former Mayor of the coastal town of Riace Domenico "Mimmo" Lucano met with his supporters on Friday after being handed down a sentence for 13 years imprisonment for his role in illegal immigration, embezzlement and fraud.
Lucano, who encouraged refugees to settle in his town, has been accused of enabling marriages between Riace men and foreign women for visa purposes. Prosecutors also allege he embezzled €5 million of funds ($5.8 million) that had been earmarked for helping migrants.
Lucano, denies all wrong-doing and could be seen with supporters, who attended a speaker’s event in Riace, to defend his actions. He said that his lawyers will appeal the decision.
The court ruled that Lucano will also have to repay €500,000 ($579,000) of EU funding.
