Residents in the city of Los Llanos de Aridane on La Palma island were seen cleaning ash and dust covering the town, on Friday, following the eruption of the Cumbre Vieja volcano earlier last week.

"I’m one of the evacuated neighbours. I’ve been out of home since the volcano exploded, I can’t go home," said Goyo as he was sweeping ash off the streets.

"I think it’s the most horrible day since the volcano erupted. We have to protect ourselves with hats, umbrellas, whatever, because your head, your clothes, everything gets covered with ashes," Ani, a resident said.

Scientists have warned that the eruption, which began on 19 September, could continue for weeks or even months.

The eruption has so far forced the evacuation of more than 6,000 people, and damaged 981 buildings, of which 855 have been totally destroyed.

SOUNDBITES:

SOT, Goyo, Resident (Spanish): "I was on holidays, I started work today, and this is the scenario, it’s incredible. Apart from this, I’m one of the evacuated neighbours. I’ve been out of home since the volcano exploded, I can’t go home, so it’s a lot of things together. Really, the ashes today were incredible, spectacular, because last night there were ashes falling, but not as much as now, it’s impressive."

SOT, Ani, Resident (Spanish): "The streets, as you can see, are totally covered in ashes this morning, more than ever, I think it’s the most horrible day since the volcano erupted. We have to protect ourselves with hats, umbrellas, whatever, because your head, your clothes, everything gets covered with ashes."

SOT, Paola, Resident (Spanish): "Regarding how the gases might affect our health and all that they’re talkingabout, really, we’re a bit scared, but we trust that the scientists will be watching for our health and that they will warn us if we are in danger."
