Russian Health Minister Mikhail Murashko announced the elimination of all obstacles to the recognition of the Russian Sputnik V vaccine by the World Health Organisation (WHO), On Saturday in Geneva.

"To date, all the barriers have been removed, so today we do not see any obstacles for our work. And this was confirmed by the General Director [of the WHO]," the minister emphasised.

Murashko said that the applicant company should sign some papers and provide a number of additional documents. The application then would be considered during an administrative procedure.

Murashko told he had discussed the issue of mutual recognition of vaccination certificates and the introduction of vaccines to domestic markets with US counterparts.

"They heard the arguments; they understand that it is rational because approving a vaccine for sale on the market and approving a medication as a prophylaxis against COVID-19 are two different processes," Murashko said.

Moreover, the head of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation stated that at the negotiations at WHO, the management of the healthcare system, mechanisms for stabilising the situation in the world and ensuring the protection of the population of many states, including countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America, were actively discussed.

"We were actively discussing the problem of access of different countries to vaccines, as a number of countries of the African continent, Asia, Latin America continue to face an acute shortage of vaccines. The Russian Federation received a number of appeals for supplies to these countries," he concluded.
