Bundestag President Wolfgang Schauble delivered a speech at the German Parliament as part of a series of events marking the end of the country’s 20-year-long mission in Afghanistan, on Wednesday in Berlin.
Addressing representatives of the German Bundeswehr in the Paul-Lobe-Haus, Wolfgang Schauble stated, “You are the Bundeswehr – you have our respect and recognition.”
Around 300 members of the Bundeswehr, including wounded soldiers, survivors and high-ranking guests, were invited to take part in the ceremony.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Defence Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer were also present at the reception, holding informal talks with the army veterans.
The deployment of German Armed Forces in Afghanistan has come to an end with the completion of the military evacuation operation on 27 August 2021.

Whether the parliament, the reason for trying and having to retrieve conclusively, that is our responsibility, that (inaudible) to apologize to the fallen, to those who died in action and to their families and to the comrades who are injured and suffering."

SOT, Wolfgang Schauble, Bundestag President (German): "Many in our society understand how strange it is for them to take a stand (inaudible) that they are prepared to use their weapons and risk their lives if necessary. (inaudible) The highest respect for the soldiers (inaudible)."
