A grand torchlight and ‘Grosser Zapfenstreich’, known as taps, closed Wednesday’s ceremony in honour of Germany’s 20-year-long mission in Afghanistan, in front of the Reichstag building in Berlin.
Soldiers marched through the square of the Republic to the beat of a military orchestra and stopped to follow command drills. Two veterans were awarded during the march.
Earlier today, a wreath-laying ceremony took place at the Bundeswehr Memorial with President Steinmeier, Defence Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbaur, and Chancellor Angela Merkel to pay tribute to members of the military who took part in Afghanistan missions.
The deployment of the German Armed Forces in Afghanistan has ended with the completion of the military evacuation operation on August 27, 2021. Fifty-nine German soldiers died in Afghanistan, with 35 of them killed in combat or due to militant attacks.
