Floods and mudslides caused by rain hit Sicily’s largest city Palermo on Wednesday.

Footage showed rescue workers freeing people stuck in their cars, immobilised by knee-high water. Road damage was visible.

The fire brigade have carried out fifty operations and reportedly eight teams were still in action. The storms, which began in the afternoon, continued for hours. Mondello was the most affected area.
